Finland's place to build for the EU Digital Identity Wallet, before it arrives

Finland now has something it has been missing: its own sandbox for the EU Digital Identity Wallet. EUDIW Sandbox Suomi is a testing ecosystem where Finnish organisations can verify, issue and test against real EU wallet flows, and work out their use case and EUDI strategy while there is still time.

EU Digital Identity Wallets are coming to every member state. Finland's wallet is expected to launch in Q3 2027, and from December 2027, accepting wallet credentials becomes mandatory. For most organisations, the hard part is not the integration itself. It is deciding how they can use the wallet, leverage it and build with it.

Until now, Finnish organisations have had no way to explore those questions in practice: no test environment, no test wallet, and no way to see what their wallet flows could look like before the wallet itself arrives. Elsewhere in Europe, the picture is different. France (France Identité), Germany (EUDI-Wallet Deutschland), Poland (mObywatel) and Denmark (AltID) already offer wallet test environments, where banks, telecom operators and public and private sector organisations are building against real wallet flows. EUDIW Sandbox Suomi closes that gap.

About the Finnish sandbox

In collaboration with FindyNet EUDIW Sandbox Suomi is launched by Hovi as a testing environment for Finnish organisations to prepare for integration with EUDI wallet ecosystem under eIDAS 2.0. It is open to everyone with focus on Finnish relying parties (Wallet verifiers) and EAA providers (Credential Issuers), intended for any organisation that is exploring to accept, verify, or issue digital wallet credentials in Finland.

Inside the sandbox, organisations can:

  • Test against a real wallet. Access a Finnish tailored EUDI Wallet and explore verification and credential issuance flows for ID and age verification, payment authorisation, strong customer authentication, digital payments and more.
  • Work with relevant credentials. The sandbox not only will provide a wallet but also a wide range of credentials, such as person identification data (PID), photo ID and other electronic attestations of attributes (EAAs), so organisations can test against the ones relevant to their use case.
  • Get relying-party ready. Understand registration, trust and the obligations that come with accepting wallet credentials in Finland.

For any organisation exploring how to integrate with the EUDI wallet ecosystem, the sandbox provides the technical and governance support needed to reach a clear EUDI strategy and value proposition.

Get started

If your organisation is looking to verify, issue or rely on EUDI wallet credentials in Finland, EUDIW Sandbox Suomi is the place to start. Registration is open now at eudi-wallet.fi, and questions can be sent to sandbox@eudi-wallet.fi.
